GRID's over-the-top attitude is supplemented with totally exaggerated acceleration, traction and braking efficiency. The handling physics are certainly solid, but they're by no means entirely satisfying. Some pundits will claim GRID has successfully bridged the gap between strict simulation and arcade thrills, but it does nothing of the sort. They're limited based on what difficulty you select, but they do remove some of the tension. They're actually quite simple to use – hit the button and use the bumper buttons to track back to the point in the instant replay you want to take control again. Just like Prince of Persia did in 2003, players have the ability to rewind the last few seconds of gameplay in the event of a crash or some hamfisted cornering. Full Auto had a similar feature, but no one remembers (or cares?) what that one was called. GRID's main feather in its cap, however, is the Flashback system. It gives you the sensation that you're really playing a Race Driver game, not 'Codies does Need for Speed'. We do like the aggressive nature of the US street racing (it's still a far cry from the pack racing we used get with V8 Supercars 3, which boasted more cars on track) and the drifting is decent enough when it works (although it's not really that fresh, and it's a pretty niche race type to take up such a large portion of the game) but something about Le Mans feels right. The colossal speeds possible on the extra long straight on the famous Circuit de la Sarthe help make the Le Mans event some of the most fun you'll have with GRID. The famous 24-hour endurance marathon is compressed into 24 minutes, with accelerated time-of-day effects adding plenty of immersion. It doesn't make up for the vanishing of most of the series' real-world championships, but it is an enjoyable event.

Le Mans is Codies premier, and almost only, license this time around. To be honest, it's all a little more superficial than it sounds, but it is a neat distraction every now and then. Once that's done you'll begin to manage your own team, and it won't be long before you're looking for teammates and managing sponsors. There are events across the US, Europe and Japan, but your first goal is to freelance for enough cash to restore a Boss Mustang. Multiplayer (GRID supports up to 12 players online) takes a similar tack – all of the events and venues unlocked in GRID World mode can be accessed and raced online. GRID World sees you travelling the globe (or, at least, the parts of it Codies thinks are a worth travelling to) earning cash and building reputation with podium finishes. Career mode, or GRID World, is unsophisticated but lengthy. The howl of metal on metal, the squealing protests of your suspension system as you launch over the hills of San Francisco, the crunch of gravel beneath your tyres – it's near perfect. There's far more to it than engine rumble, and GRID truly does nail it.

Codies is one of the few developers that knows how to replicate the sounds of racing, and how to do it right. That said, the aural experience is even better. It is a brilliant looking game, no doubt. The damage-modelling is also astonishing, especially when enjoyed in the super slo-mo instant replays or a 'Flashback' sequence (we'll touch on that second one shortly). The tracks are lined with heaving crowds of sweaty spectators, cheering as you blitz by. The interiors of the cars in particular are wonderfully lavish with detail, and as a result cabin view really is the only way to drive. There's a lot to like about GRID, primarily in the audio-visual department. Great, huh? Not really, because this invariably comes shortly before you also realise this new intruder is vapid, shallow and more and more uninterestingly as time goes on. Maybe you give it a go, so to speak, and find out this spunky new bit of crumpet is wilder, hotter and flashier than your old partner. Your reaction? Shock? Surprise? Of course, but there'll also be a certain amount of curiosity. Imagine, if you will, you wake up one morning to find your loving soul mate, the wind beneath your wings, replaced with some beautiful, yet stupid, celebrity you fancy (this, by the way, is only relevant to anyone not dating a beautiful, yet stupid, celebrity – sorry, we should have stipulated that). Any of you readers in long-term relationships will see where we're coming from – the rest of you will just have to indulge us. There, you don't have to watch Citizen Kane now.
